![]() Tynan was a solo developer for the majority of Rimworld’s development, but brought in additional help as needed until he built a small full-time team to assist with DLC and refining. None of this would be possible, however, without a dedicated development team producing steady updates along the way. Art, stories, screenshots of mega bases, and comics of each player’s unique shenanigans make up the plentiful content on the Rimworld subreddit. The ability to personalize nearly every aspect of the civilization has been the secret to Rimworld’s cult success, since it can not only be changed to suit each player, but each play through. Some enslave those unlucky enough to wander by while others convince prisoners to join the colony willingly, and the very best players skin the dead to make beautiful jackets and armchairs. Some will bandage up the prisoners and release them, some will harvest their vital organs and limbs to sell to passing traders. With the option to imprison wounded invaders, Rimworld’s storytelling allows players to run their colony in any number of ways along the good/bad spectrum. Dangers present themselves in Rimworld in the form of animals (wolves, bears, cobras, etc.), large subterranean bugs akin to the ones from Starship Troopers, advanced mechanoids, and of course, other humans. The planet is anything but lifeless, and with life comes danger. With no hope of rescue, the travelers gather supplies that landed around them and get to work building housing, agriculture, defenses, and even recreation. Rimworld was originally set as a group of interplanetary travelers that crash land on an undeveloped planet on the outer rim of the galaxy. Inevitably, ties are made to Prison Architect when talking about a major PC game coming to consoles, so the question of Rimworld following suit by coming to Xbox Game Pass is usually one of the first asked. All of this hype has non-playing fans clamoring for an expansion to additional platforms like Nintendo Switch, Xbox One/Xbox Series X/S, & PlayStation 4/5. This strategy has clearly worked for Ludeon Studios since there have never been more people playing the game, according to SteamDB. This passion is shown by the numbers as well, with Rimworld being a popular item bought and sold on discount sites such as Kinguin and G2A, and it remaining a popular purchase on retail platforms despite sale prices rarely going beyond 10% off. Rimworld has gathered a large and passionate fanbase, driven by endless situations created by the game’s AI Storytellers in a free and open world. It was released as a Kickstarter in November 2013 and saw a full retail launch in October 2018. Rimworld is a colony management and simulator produced by Ludeon Studios, headed by Tynan Sylvester. If it makes its way to Game Pass, I’ll be sure to update again! Check out my article on the ground penetrating scanner to get prepped for the console fun! UPDATE: Since the original creation of this post Rimworld for console has been released as of ! This release is currently not on the list for Xbox Game Pass but the simple fact that Rimworld is coming to console is a HUGE step in the right direction.
